Life is Precious
At all stages
Now more than ever in our nation, it is imperative to increase the Church’s awareness of what is happening in the public arena on issues that matter.
We must promote the common good by protecting unborn children. And we must value the vulnerable and the aging.
We believe in the sanctity of life – Protecting our God-given,
inalienable right to life, from conception through every stage of life.
One of our cornerstone beliefs is that every life is a gift from God.
From conception until death, we believe that life is to be treasured. We also believe that those who are vulnerable, aged, and conceived from less than ideal circumstances are loved by God.
We monitor public policy, support leaders, and train citizens on the fundamental concept: life is a gift from God and it should be treated with care.
What God Says About Life:
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of the, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:14-16)
“….and do not kill the innocent and righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked.” (Exodus 23:7)
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
“Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.” (Psalm 127:3)
“Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you.” (Isaiah 44:2)

Physician Assisted Suicide
The Facts & Dangers
Michigan lawmakers have introduced a package of bills that would legalize physician assisted suicide. Supporters call this “Death with Dignity,” but prescribing death is neither compassionate nor dignified. This is a dangerous policy that violates the sanctity of life, opens the doors to abuse, and places those who are medically vulnerable at serious risk.
Unfortunately, 13 other States and the District of Columbia have legalized doctor-prescribed death. Michigan law has long protected patients by prohibiting doctors from prescribing assisted suicide drugs. Since 1998, state law has recognized that medical care should protect life, not end it. We want to keep it that way.
A Personal Choice?
Physician assisted suicide is often presented as a matter of personal choice. But in practice, it can quickly become pressure. When patients feel like a burden to others, fear losing their independence, or worry about the cost of care, “choice” can become coercion.
The Michigan Alliance for Ethical Care warns that physician assisted suicide places “the sick, vulnerable, elderly, and those living with disabilities at risk for coercion, abuse, and denial of care.” Families, caregivers, insurers, and medical systems may all have incentives that conflict with the patient’s best interest.
The National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency that advises the White House and Congress, has consistently opposed assisted suicide laws.
Death is Not the Solution
Physician assisted suicide is often proposed as a solution to suffering. But instead of eliminating suffering, these policies seek to eliminate those who suffer. This is not empathy, but cruelty.
If people want to choose death because they fear dependence, isolation, or becoming a burden, our answer should be compassionate care, not lethal drugs. For those who are terminally ill, hospice and palliative care should be offered as a way to walk with the dying instead of abandoning them to self-inflicted death.
