Religious Freedom
One of our paramount freedoms to preserve and defend
We believe in the freedom to worship, preserving the influence of faith and family as the great foundation of American freedom embodied in our Judeo-Christian heritage.
If people of faith, virtues, integrity, and traditional values do not monitor the activity of our local, state, and national leaders NOW, or our freedoms could be stripped away very soon.
Nowhere in the Bible does God call us to give up when things grow challenging.
We must ensure religious freedom for all, opposing the corrupting moral influences in our schools and society, and calling for a limited government that does not usurp God-given individual rights of religion and conscience.
What Does the Bible Say?
• “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
• “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed?” (Psalm 2:1-2)
• But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)
• Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” (Daniel 3:16-18)
• But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge.” (Acts 4:19)
Michigan’s official beginning made a religious freedom a priority. In fact, America’s origin was due to the cry of a people who yearned to worship as they saw fit.
When the Pilgrims came to America, the Jesuits came to Michigan the desire burned on their hearts to
- Love God
- Show others the love of Jesus
- And raise their families as they saw fit
When Michigan became a state in 1837, a constitution had already been drafted in 1835 that made religion a priority for this state.
“Every person has a right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of his own conscience; and no person can of right be compelled to attend, erect, or support, against his will, any place of religious worship, or pay any tithes, taxes or other rates, for the support of any minister of the gospel or teacher of religion.”
- Michigan Constitution on Religious Freedom in 1835
Every person shall be at liberty to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience. No person shall be compelled to attend, or, against his consent, to contribute to the erection or support of any place of religious worship, or to pay tithes, taxes or other rates for the support of any minister of the gospel or teacher of religion. No money shall be appropriated or drawn from the treasury for the benefit of any religious sect or society, theological or religious seminary; nor shall property belonging to the state be appropriated for any such purpose. The civil and political rights, privileges and capacities of no person shall be diminished or enlarged on account of his religious belief.
