2009 Public Policy Review ...
Here are some of the major items that demanded action in the Michigan legislature! We sent emails, submitted letters to committees, talked to elected leaders ... on behalf of you!
We opposed Representative
Alma Wheeler’s bill (4131) allowing two unmarried
persons (same or opposite sex) to legally adopt children in Michigan. The bill
is currently in reading in the House.
We supported a package of bills protecting human embryos from cloning and
prohibiting animal embryo experimentation. These pieces of legislation are still
residing in the Senate’s Health Policy committee. (Senate Bills
647,
648,
649,
650,
651,
652)
We opposed a package of House bills that would mandate pharmacists to provide
medications contradicting their religious beliefs, place restrictions on
pregnancy resource centers, and provide contraception & infertility coverage by
health insurance providers. (House Bills
5164,
5158,
5156,
5157,
5159,
5160)
We opposed House Bill 4192, sponsored by Representative Rebekah Warren,
providing special rights/protection from discrimination to same sex 'couples'.
The bill is currently in reading in the House
We opposed
House Bills 5587 and
5588, sponsored by Representative Pam Byrnes,
which would repeal the ban on same-sex marriage in Michigan. The bills are still
residing in the House Judiciary committee.
We supported
Senate Bills 616 and
618, sponsored by Senators Gerald Van Woerkom
and Wayne Kuipers (respectively), which regulated the growing and dispensing of
medical marijuana by a licensed pharmacist. The bills are still residing in the
Senate Judiciary committee.
We opposed Representative
Alma Wheeler's bill (5163) which stressed new,
'objective' sex education from 'professionals' in public schools. The bill is
currently in reading in the House.
