Prohibiting the online sale of alcohol
(House Bill 4959)
(8/26/05 posted)
ACTION NEEDED: Support
House Bill 4959
which would prohibit the direct shipment and sale over the
Internet and mail of wine and other alcohol products.
Find out what you can do to help . . .
ISSUE DETAILS: Your help is urgently needed to make sure Michigan doesn’t join a growing number of states that are making it easier for kids to purchase alcohol.
A bipartisan group of state legislators have introduced House Bill 4959, which would prohibit the direct shipment and sale of alcoholic products over the Internet. This family-friendly legislation comes in response to a narrow U.S. Supreme Court ruling that threw out Michigan’s current prohibition of out-of-state Internet alcohol sales.
Make no mistake, without HB 4959 Michigan will be deluged with a floor of on-line alcohol marketers targeting the most Internet savvy demographic group there is: our children. We can’t let this happen and we need your help today.
1) Your local member of the
House of Representatives needs to know you oppose opening up Michigan to
the unregulated, unchecked Internet sale of alcohol. And your state
representative needs to know you want him or her to support HB 4959.
Contact your state representative (see below) and ask him/her to support
HB 4959. Also, please call or write House Majority Leader Chris Ward,
sponsor of this bill, and thank him for his strong pro-family stance. His
office number is (517) 373-1784 and email:
chrisward@house.mi.gov.
2) We also need your help in
letting your neighbors and community know about this important
legislation. Please take a few moments to write a letter to the editor of
your local paper. You will find attached to this e-mail information that
will help you craft such a letter and even some suggested examples of
letters that you can personalize for your use.
Time is of the essence and we need you to act today. The House of Representatives could take up HB 4959 yet this month. That’s why it is imperative your local state representative knows your position on this bill. The wealthy out-of-state wine and alcohol special interest groups are lobbying hard to kill this bill and we cannot allow this to happen.
