CTV In Saginaw

Last weekend (January 25-26), CTV staff hosted a Saginaw area grassroots activist meeting where we discussed organizing and building a strong social traditional values network in the area. The meeting was encouraging as we heard from community leaders and activists on their analysis and concerns for the district. Progress was made in our strategy of building a stronger network in the region.

We also co-hosted a Greatest Story Never Told presentation with our sister organization, Foundation for Traditional Values. The GSNT presentation was inspirational, as James Muffett shared about the religious foundation for freedom in our country and how to preserve those freedoms. We were honored to have State Senator Roger Kahn join us; he had the opportunity to touch base with his constituents on life issues, including the stem cell debate.

If you would like to build a grassroots activist network or host a Greatest Story Never Told presentation in your area, please contact us, and we'll be glad to help you.

Americans for Prosperity Summit Report

By CTV President James Muffett

Over 800 people attended the AFP rally (January 12 in Livonia), which for their first major Michigan event was a huge success. Hats off to Michigan Director Amy Hagerstrom for pulling off such a great event featuring such a great line-up of state and National Leaders. The three Presidential Candidates who addressed the crowd, Duncan Hunter, John McCain and Mitt Romney all had strong support but Romney seemed to be the favorite of the majority in attendance.

It was a great honor to be invited to participate in the afternoon panel discussion about the economic and social conservative agendas. Other panelists were Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis, State Representative Jack Hoogendyk and Americans For Tax Reform President Grover Norquist. The wide-ranging discussion was moderated by MRG Consultant Denise DeCook and featured presentations from each panelist followed by Q&A. My remarks focused on the need for economic and social conservatives, though they often differ on policy and direction, to recognize their shared interests and to find ways to dialogue and work together.

It was interesting to hear the concerns of some of the Libertarians in attendance, especially their discomfort with "religion" as a part of the public discourse. My response was to quote John Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and President of Princeton University, who said that a nation must either preserve its virtue or lose its liberty. The idea that true liberty requires virtue in the people - which, in the founder's view, is best inspired and maintained by religion - is not often understood by people who view freedom as the primary and most important principle.

Republican State Party Convention

This weekend found approximately 3000 grassroots activists, and leaders gathered for the Michigan Republican State Convention in Grand Rapids. Each congressional district met for their caucus meetings Friday night, which allowed for candidates and state leaders to poke their noses in to say a friendly hello and garner support from each area. Presidential candidates even made their debut, including US Senator Sam Brownback and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Saturday morning found all attendees gathered in the convention hall to elect statewide party leaders; the biggest and only contested race was for Youth Chair. Matt Hall won by around a dozen votes, which just goes to show us that our votes do matter!

CTV made a presence by hosting an information table where people could find out more about our group; we also did a fun giveaway for a free IPOD for people that joined our mailing list and entered the drawing.

But most importantly the event allowed us time to re-connect with state and local leaders.

Just like a convention is designed to do, attendees left there re-energized to pour their efforts into fast approaching Presidential elections. But also, hopefully motivated with fresh passion to keep working on the local level to establish strong conservative leaders who are fighting for traditional family values.

Pro-Life Motorcade and Prayer Service

Please join us Monday, January 22, 2007, for the Pro-Life Motorcade and Interdenominational Prayer Service to remember over 50 million babies who have died from abortion since the Roe v. Wade decision was made on this date in 1973. This is a great alternative for those who can't travel to Right-to-Life's event in Washington D.C. and you will be blessed by the words spoken and testimonies heard.

The motorcade will line up at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Libery Christian Church, located at 2215 East Michigan Avenue, in Lansing, a few blocks west of the I-127 freeway. It will leave at 11:00 a.m. and proceed through the streets of downtown Lansing, around the Capital, to the prayer service (beginning approximately at noon) at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum, located at 2520 West Willow Street in Lansing.

In the event that the Lansing Public Schools close because of a snow storm on January 22nd, the Motorcade will be automatically cancelled and the Prayer Service will be rescheduled for Monday, January 29, 2007 at 12:15 p.m. in the Mausoleum at S. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Sponsored by St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Diocese of Lansing, Shared Pregnancy, Faith Bible Church of Delta Township, Right-to-Life of Lansing, Liberty Christian Church, and other contributors.

REPORT: CTV joins Anti-Gambling Event with MichGo & 23 is Enough . . .

September 1, 2006

CTV joined other pastors and area activists in Grand Rapids recently for a presentation on the dangers and pitfalls of gambling. Focus on the Family's gambling analyst Chad Wells, Dr. Rogers from Cornerstone University and Pastor Tom Grey all presented a wealth of information on gambling. Pastors & Grassroots activists hopefully walked away with a renewed energy to fight this issue in their communities & congregations.

CTV's Executive Director, Amy Hawkins, who was present for the meeting commented: "It is good to see pastors and community leaders get together in the same room to better understand something that is on the verse of destroying our culture. The event was informative, and very credible. I look forward to seeing the benefits resound . . ."
