What is a Citizenship Sunday?
A Citizenship Sunday is an opportunity for you to encourage and promote responsible Christian citizenship at your church and with your church families. There are many ways to participate in Citizenship Sundays, including sermons, special music, prayer and scripture readings.
On these Citizenship Sundays (or a different Sunday if you need) take this opportunity to:
- encourage your church families to get involved as active citizens in your community
- ask your church family to Pray for your Leaders
- Use the theme of that Sunday to educate and motivate on the issue corresponding with that day
- Register individuals to vote
- Use this opportunity to discover who else in your family is concerned about promoting conservative values in your area; start an Issues and Action team with those interested
How do I host a Citizenship Sunday?
Here's a few tips for getting started:
1. Run the idea by your pastor as soon as possible to get his blessing.
2. Recruit a friend or two to help you (depending on the size of your church, you may need a large group to help).
3. Start announcing your Citizenship Sunday ASAP! It's best to start at least two weeks before the event. Announce/advertise in
the church bulletin, website, weekly announcements, flyers on the bulletin boards, and especially from the Pastor from the pulpit.
4. Make arrangements for the day of:
- Set up a table in the back hall/foyer with information on the subject/issue of that particular Sunday.
- Have some voter registration forms available (make sure to read the instructions).
- Have some prayer sheets to remind people to pray for our leaders.
- Other Ideas: Have contact information for your local leaders available; provide information on organizations in Michigan that are working for traditional values (i.e. CTV, Michigan Family Forum, Right to Life, etc)
