ACLU of Michigan Opposes Driver's Licenses ...with a "chip"

Michigan Messenger, April 16, 2009

The ACLU issued a statement: "Under the current agreement with DHS, the Michigan Enhanced Driver’s License, one of three accepted pieces of identification for border crossing starting this June, requires the inclusion of an unencrypted “radio frequency identification” chip (RFID) in the license. RFID’s can store huge amounts of personal data and, when unsecured like proposed in the DHS agreement, can be accessed wirelessly by anyone with a reading device from 30 feet up to, according to some experts, a football field away"... MSU Students ask university for gender blind housing policy

Michigan Messenger, April 15, 2009

Enabling transgender lifestyle on college campus?
"If students from the Michigan State University branch of the ACLU get their way, future students at the land grant university will have the option to room with a person of the opposite gender, The State News reports.

Current MSU policy prohibits co-habitation of two people of the opposite sex. That rule, some have argued, makes the transition process for transgender students more difficult and cumbersome.... (keep reading)"

Detroit News: Hundreds to gather for Tax Day protest
Lansing -- A national wave of populist unrest will crest on Tax Day this week as protesters gather in hundreds of cities around Michigan and across the country to express their opposition to taxes and increased government spending and intrusion.

Organizers say 1,000 people could gather at noon Wednesday on the grounds of the State Capitol in Lansing for a Michigan Taxpayer Tea Party to register their displeasure with government.

"It seems that all Lansing wants to do is solve problems by raising taxes, using Michigan citizens as an ATM," said protest organizer Scott Hagerstrom, Michigan director for the Americans for Prosperity, a national free market advocacy group. (Keep reading...)

Hate Crimes Bill Passes Michigan House

Say No to House Bill 6341
Review the legislation here.

"Hate Crimes" legislation has been used in many instances by homosexual activists as a "wedge" to boost the public's acceptance of homosexual behavior and to insert language in the law toward that end. Although this effort might appeal to our compassion for victims, it is really a Trojan Horse that should be opposed. There are already laws on the books to punish assault or other crimes committed against any person. In other places this type of legislation is followed by efforts to use the force of law to silence any opposition to the "political agenda" of homosexual activists, including anyone who has a differing opinion or set of values.

Unfortunately we are a bit behind on this issue, and much to our disappointment it passed the House with a wide margin. The Bill will be now taken up by the State Senate and we must take action. The Legislature is currently in a lame duck session which means that there are a lot of items on the agenda before the end of the year.

Disclaimer: Let it be known that CTV does not practice or advocate "hate" toward anyone - regardless of their behavioral choices or political views. We are simply engaged in a civil dialogue from our Judeo-Christian world view about what is best in terms of the laws that govern society in general and Michigan in specific.

ACTION NEEDED! Contact your State Senator today!

The Bill will be sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee on December 2. They need to hear from you now!

In addition, contact your State Senator in the event that the Bill passes out of Committee.

Post Election Thoughts From CTV President James Muffett

"The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just."

- President Abraham Lincoln

Every candidate for which I voted lost Tuesday, except State Representative Rick Jones. In addition, both statewide Ballot Proposals passed in spite of my most fervent opposition. Even though I have been deeply engaged in the political process for over 20 years, I am so glad that my faith and hope are not in temporal things. I have been preaching that truth for years and my own words echo in my ears. (Continue Reading...)

Stay Engaged!

Results might be discouraging – but our job hasn’t changed!
Now that the campaigns have ended, we must continue to be alert and pay attention to the legislative process in Michigan and the nation. CTV will continue to monitor the issues and keep you informed. If you are not already signed up, join our email list and invite a friend to do the same.

Also, it is a good idea to follow the actions of your legislators on the state and federal level. Contact them and let them know your thoughts whether to agree or disagree. Remember, THEY represent YOU. And pray frequently. Our job continues, no matter the result. We must remain diligent.

Californians tell court 'marriage' is 1-man-1-woman

A Post-Election Chat with Ralph Reed

from Beliefnet: God-o-Meter by Dan Gilgoff
Amid today's talk that Barack Obama has narrowed the God Gap, God-o-Meter checked in with Ralph Reed, who spearheaded religious outreach for George W. Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns and who pioneered such outreach for Republicans as executive director.

What surprised you in the exit polls?
The durability -- in a difficult election cycle -- of the Republicans' conservative coalition -- the overwhelming margin for McCain among evangelicals was about what Bush got four years ago. I don't think anyone would have anticipated that six or eight months ago. I don't think that was due entirely to the Palin effect, although she helped. (Continue Reading...)

ELECTION ARTICLE: James Dobson on Importance of Presidential Choice

Let's start with the need to elect a pro-family, pro-life President. The importance of this objective cannot be overstated. Between 2009 and 2012, there will likely be two or more opportunities for the President to nominate new justices to the Supreme Court. Some court watchers say there could be as many as four resignations. That alone should give us serious pause as we consider for whom to cast our votes.

In the months ahead, the Supreme Court will likely hand down rulings that will impact America for generations to come. We need a President who will nominate conservative, strict-constructionist judges to the Court. If that doesn't happen, the highest court in the land could become stacked--even more than it already is--with justices who will endeavor to legislate from the bench and impose a liberal agenda on the nation. It will likely affect the definition of marriage, religious freedom, and the protection (or lack thereof) of life in the womb. (Continue Reading...)

ELECTION NEWS: House Dem candidates again getting Stryker's help

Michigan Democrats running for state House seats look likely to broaden their 58-52 majority on Nov. 4. A major reason is the influence of Jon Stryker and the Coalition for Progress. In 2006, the Kalamazoo billionaire's campaign contributions helped at least four Democrats win state House seats and played a role in at least 10 House and Senate contests. This year, the coalition Stryker founded is spending big money in at least eight districts to help Democrats increase their edge in the state House. And Stryker is the person making it all possible. ELECTION ARTICLE: The Change We Need

By Kendall Wingrove, free-lance writer for Amy Foundation

Presidential candidates and media pundits have repeatedly warned that 2008 is the most important election in America’s history. Whether voters choose a maverick or a community organizer, the desire is for someone that will help us emerge from these dark days.

As we entertain grand visions of a brave leader whisking us away to the promised land, it is worth reflecting for a moment. Before jumping on any bandwagons, everyone ought to look in the mirror and get a good glimpse of the real problem.

The fault lies not in our stars, but in ourselves. (Continue Reading...)

PROPOSAL 2 NEWS: Loopholes galore in Proposal 2

The Daily Press & Argus seems to have some confusion about Proposal 2. In a recent newspaper the "Today's Online Poll question read: "Do you support Proposal 2, which would ease restrictions on stem cell research in Michigan?" This implies that stem cell research in Michigan is restricted, and therefore passage of this proposal would ease the restrictions, and it implies that all stem cell research is being addressed in this proposal. [Jon] Stryker, listed as Michigan's fifth wealthiest individual in the most recent Forbes magazine ranking, is heir to a medical-supply company fortune and known mostly for his advocacy of gay rights and preserving the population of gorillas in the wild. "If this was a serious effort to regulate an illegal substance for medical purposes, you would have warnings, you would have controls, you would have limits, you're supposed to grow your own, your supposed to have other people grow it for you," said U.S. Drug Czar, John Walters. COURT ARTICLE: Future of Michigan Hinges on Court Election

A Letter From James Muffett, CTV President

As we approach Tuesday, November 4, 2008, I am seized with a sense of urgency. Throughout my 20 plus years in politics, I have come to know and value the importance of what some call "values voters." As in the 2004 Presidential election, it is a proven fact that they do impact elections, especially when the margins are very small. Therefore, we must not let apathy or indifference take hold. PROPOSAL 1 NEWS: More Groups Join Against Proposal 1

A group of local law enforcement agencies, including the Holland Police Department, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and Zeeland Police Department, recently released a joint statement opposing Proposal 1. "'Medical' marijuana is a Trojan horse for legalizing the drug itself and for making it available without regard to medical science," the statement read. "The real issue is public safety and the staggering effect this initiative could have on children and families residing in Michigan. This dangerous initiative is loaded with loopholes that will lead to unintended negative consequences." (Continue Reading...)

PROPOSAL 1 RESOURCE: Message to Employers - Proposal Allows Pot Usage in Workplace

Michigan voters will decide on November 4 a State ballot proposal which seeks to legalize the medical use of marijuana. The proposed law, when viewed in detail, actually permits marijuana use in, among other places, the workplace. All the employee needs is a doctor’s statement that the employee "is likely to receive... benefit from the medical use of marijuana to treat or alleviate ... debilitating medical condition or symptoms". Section 3(I). (Continue Reading...)

PROPOSAL 2 NEWS: Don't Exempt Health Industry From Oversight

Proposal 2, the embryonic stem cell ballot proposal, will not provide the answers promised by its backers. Instead, Proposal 2 goes too far by placing an exemption from health, safety or ethical oversight in the state Constitution for this new industry. (Continue Reading...)

In a 4-3 decision, the Connecticut Supreme Court Friday struck down the state’s marriage law, which defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman, saying it is unconstitutional. PROPOSAL 1 NEWS: CBS 60 Minutes' Report on Legalized Marijuana in California

Eleven years ago, California became the first of a dozen states in the nation to legalize medical marijuana. True believers, including many doctors, say pot works to ease pain or counter the side effects of chemotherapy. And the National Academy of Sciences agrees, if the drug is carefully used. Critics see medical use as the gateway to legalizing all marijuana.

Group Speaks Against Proposal 1

There is a proposal on the November ballot you need to know about. Supporters say that it allows for the "medical" use of marijuana. But the proposal is filled with loopholes, errors and unintended consequences. That's why Michigan medical professionals, law enforcement officials and parents and taxpayers are uniting to say "No" to Proposal 1. Watch their press conference here (at the top of the article, click on the link with the small video camera icon). For more information, visit the group's website at www.nopotshops.com.

Proposal 2's Deception Ends Regulation

Michigan voters should be aware that Proposal 2, the embryonic stem cell ballot proposal, is deceptive. Supporters argue that its approval is necessary in order for ethical embryonic stem cell research to occur, when in fact this research is already taking place in Michigan under current law. What the proposal really does is create an unprecedented exemption for this new industry from future oversight. (Continue Reading...)

Preserving Life Through the Court

In this season when Michigan residents are concerned with the preservation of a conservative Supreme Court, a balanced perspective on the court system is encouraging. Read this article by Former Federal Judge, Law Professor and CTV Board Member William Wagner.

Michigan Law and the Scales of Justice: Life in the Balance

The analysis of the Michigan Supreme Court presents a strong statuory scheme protecting life and a court majority committed to principles of judicial restraint. This jurisprudential commitment of the current Court to defer to legislative enactments, combined with Michigan's existing statutory scheme protecting life, presently provides an excellent platform for defending life, particularly with a vision toward the era after Roe v Wade's reversal. Cliff Taylor Interview with American Justice Partnership Foundation

The Wall Street Journal has called the Michigan Supreme Court the “finest court in the land.” Chief Justice Taylor has served on the Michigan Supreme Court for ten years, and will stand for re-election to an eight-year term in November 2008. Check out this interview with Cliff Taylor from American Justice Partnership Foundation.

Legalization of Medical Marijuana on the November Ballot

The Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) and the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care are urging voters to pass Proposal 1 on November 4, 2008. Citizens for Traditional Values is strongly opposed to Proposal 1.

Proponents argue that marijuana should be legalized for patients suffering from debilitating diseases in an effort to make every aid option available. Studies have shown that although marijuana can be helpful in some cases, it is actually the active substance THC that provides the relief. THC has been extracted from marijuana plants and synthesized as the drug Marinol, which has been proven to be effective in relieving many of the same conditions as marijuana without the harmful side effects. Not only is marijuana less beneficial than supposed, it has a host of long-range physical and mental consequences, as well as being a recognized “gateway drug” – a drug that leads to other illicit drug use. Legalizing marijuana for medical use is little more than an attempt to gain a foothold toward fully legalizing marijuana as well as other illicit drugs.

Vote NO on Proposal 1.

Unrestricted Human Embryonic Research on the November Ballot

Don’t be fooled, vote NO on Proposal 2.
In November, Michigan citizens will vote on an amendment to the State Constitution that would allow unrestricted experimentation on human embryos and would allow scientists to bypass any state or local laws that would attempt to limit their research. Although embryonic stem-cell research is currently allowed—though not state funded—in Michigan, the danger of this amendment is that it would permit any and all kinds of research on human embryos and force taxpayers to foot the bill. This is equivalent to “Frankenstein” science and will, in the words of a key supporter, “Pave the way for human cloning” in Michigan. CTV is a member of the broad coalition opposed to Proposal 2 aptly named Michigan Citizens Against Unrestricted Science and Experimentation. We encourage a NO vote on Proposal 2. For more information visit the MIcause website.

Court upholds barring proposal to reform government

LANSING -- The Michigan Supreme Court today upheld a decision to bar the so-called Reform Michigan Government Now proposal from going before voters in November, agreeing with a lower court ruling that the sweeping and multifaceted proposal could not be considered as a constitutional amendment. Should state track homeschooled kids?

The proposed registration of homeschooled students provides no value added to the school population that is not being served ("As more homeschool, state could track kids," Sept. 9). This is additional paperwork that does absolutely nothing for the kids. There are already truancy regulations on the books, so kids who are not being schooled can be followed up on. Home Schools increase, as state considers registration

Detroit News announces that the Home School Registration bill, introduced by State Representative Brenda Clack last year, is on the possible slate of bills to continue pushing in the Michigan Legislature.

The event, held at Saddleback Church’s main campus on August 16, was hosted by Dr. Rick Warren. Watch the videos of the event here.

GOP: Rhetoric stirs, but fails to impress

James Muffett, the president of Citizens for Traditional Values in Lansing, gave Obama credit for giving an eloquent and stirring speech. But he disagreed with his remarks on abortion, when Obama said it was time to find more common ground on the issue. He makes light of the issue," Muffett said. "All the rest of it doesn't matter when you leave behind the most defenseless." (Continue Reading...)

Join Clergy for a Conservative Court

While most people will be focused on the Presidential election of 2008, there is another contest of critical importance for Michigan citizens - the Supreme Court. Although often overlooked, the Courts in America have been responsible for many damaging decisions including legalized abortion, the proliferation of obscenity and homosexual "marriage" just to name a few. That is precisely why we formed "Clergy for a Conservative Court."

Anyone can join this Clergy for Conservative Court coalition, not just ministers. Sign up for our weekly email to stay informed on this vital project!

Clergy for a Conservative Court Resources

Here are some great sources of news and information regarding the defense of traditional values in the judicial system. Both of these organizations are very active in protecting pro-life and pro-family values in courts across the nation. In Michigan, the Alliance Defense Fund recently stopped the city of Grand Rapids from using a local ordinance to prevent a group of Christians from publicly expressing a religious message at a city park. The American Center for Law and Justice contributed to the high-profile California appeals court decision to allow parents to homeschool their children, overturning a lower court ruling that prohibited homeschooling.

GOP Names Picks for Michigan's Top Court

Michigan Republicans gathered in Novi on Saturday to nominate candidates for the state Supreme Court and the university and education boards. There were few surprises among those nominated, but the state convention allowed the GOP to hone the message they hope leads them to victory with U.S. Sen. John McCain as the Republican nominee for president all the way to the state House of Representatives and township boards. (Continue Reading...)
